[13/01/2011] What you need to know about the electric toothbrush
Many claim that the manual toothbrushes are far more effective and the electric ones have gained popularity simply because they are marketed aggressively. Well, the truth is that the type of toothbrush that you use is often irrelevant as long as you use it properly, but the electric toothbrush has quite a few advantages over the manual one. For one, it could come with timer function that makes sure that you brush for as long as needed, it is far easier to use by the elderly since it does not require that many movements, and is suitable for teaching children good brushing habits.
Some of the electric toothbrushes are powered by built-in rechargeable batteries, which allows you to simply plug them into the mains socket as soon as the battery starts running low. They are typically more expensive than the ones that use replaceable batteries, but also far more convenient and could go on for weeks before you need to recharge. Another difference amongst the various models and makes is the motion that the head uses to clean your teeth – some brushes use rotation and oscillation, while others rely on rotation only. According to some dental professional, the brushes that have round heads, spinning in one direction and then in the opposite are the most effective. The popular sonic toothbrushes also use vibration, but they vibrate at a high frequency, which breaks down the plaque easily.
Specific models of electric toothbrushes are great for parents that have to brush their children’s teeth or for the children to use on their own – they are typically brightly colored, softer, and much easier to use. They are also ideal for teaching the child the proper brushing habits since they are more fun to use than the manual brushes. Another advantage is the fact that people that use an electric toothbrush tend to brush for at least two minutes, while most people that use manual, brush for forty seconds on average.
At the end of the day, head-to-head tests have shown that only a few of the electric models deliver better cleaning, which serves to prove that the way you use the brush is what matters most. Unless you have limited mobility, you could use either type and still maintain excellent oral hygiene and have healthy gums and teeth.
