[13/01/2011] The Advantages of Electric Toothbrushes

Maintaining good oral hygiene is one of the easiest ways to prevent pathogenic bacteria from causing an infection that can have severe symptoms and considerably endanger your health. However, even people that brush their teeth regularly are often doing it in a way that is least effective, and do not spend the required two minutes brushing.

This is why the electric toothbrushes are recommended by many professionals to children and adults alike. Even though they come in various shapes and sizes, the popular ones have a number of useful functions such as timers, which not only times the amount that you need to brush your teeth, but could also signal you to move to the next mouth quadrant after a certain time. Another notable feature is the way the head of the electric toothbrushes moves – most brushes use pulsating and osculating movements, as well as rotation, which ensures that the brushing is effective.

Getting an electric toothbrush with rechargeable battery is also a wise investment since it will reduce the cost of using it and even when the battery runs low, you could easily recharge it at home instead of running to the nearest store for a new one. In most cases, the built-in batteries last for a few good weeks and even months and in the worst case scenario, you will have to use the battery charger two or three times per month.  However, even with electric brushes, you should take the time to learn how to use them properly – if you press too hard, you could hurt your gums, and if you do not apply enough pressure, you will not brush effectively. Most analysts believe that people with manual toothbrushes brush harder, which often leads to bleeding gums. The electric toothbrushes are also ideal for people with limited mobility since they do not require the user to make that many movements.

The important fact to remember is that you could easily maintain great oral hygiene, regardless of the toothbrush that you use – as long as you brush for two minutes, at least twice daily or after every meal, and floss at least once per day, you are likely to have healthy teeth and gums for a long time!
