[29/03/2011] Oral Hygiene and the Role of Tooth Brush

We know for a fact that the mouth is a harbor of several harmful bacteria which leads to a variety of tooth and gum problems thus it is absolutely necessary for man to be extra-conscious with his or her oral care procedure, which includes daily brushing.

Appropriate oral hygiene is impossible without the knowledge of proper choice of tooth brush and appropriate cleaning, storage and replacement of tooth brushes. Here are a few advises from the American Dental Association which can help you maintain good tooth brushes in aid of proper oral care.

Replacement of Tooth Brush

Tooth brushes are one of the overly used personal items of an individual. It is used approximately three times every day thus it requires to be replaced on a regular basis. ADA recommends replacement of tooth brushes every three to four months or as soon as you notice the bristles of your tooth brush is starting to scrimmage because of frequent usage.

Storage of Tooth Brush

Microorganisms can easily grow on your tooth brush even after you wash it thoroughly so it is best that you keep them in semi - closed containers. It is not highly recommended that you place tooth brushes in a closed container because it attracts speedier growth of bacteria. It is best if you can keep them in open air for it will inhibit the growth of bacteria and will protect your tooth brush from contamination against these harmful microorganisms.

Cleaning of Tooth Brush

Always rinse your tooth brush every after each use preferably with hot water so it can be disinfected and allow it to dry before placing it inside the container. In case you place toothbrushes in close containers then make sure it is somehow separated into compartments to avoid the bristles from coming into contact with one another thus preventing possible cross-contamination.

It is also recommended that you rinse your tooth brush with a mouthwash to further guarantee that it is free from unwanted bacterial build-up or use of tooth brush sanitizers if necessary to avoid transfer of germs and bacteria from your tooth brush.

Aside from these tooth brush cleaning, storage and maintenance tips you are also reminded not to share tooth brushes even with family members. For hygienic purposes, you should strictly adhere to this recommendation since sharing of toothbrushes places the individual into an increased risk of infections.
