[29/03/2011] Bad Tooth Brush Design
Man can be overly creative at times and may go overboard. This is perfectly true with the fashion statement declared by some actors and actresses when they present themselves in the public while some are easily recognizable in the product design which they make, like in some ergonomic tooth brushes.
Ergonomics is the study of designing devices and equipment according to the seen structure of the human body, its movement and man’s cognitive abilities. These are carefully performed and taken into consideration by product designers to avoid muscular strains or any unwanted injuries in a person.
Ergonomic toothbrushes are popular nowadays because it promises to give you better convenience when performing your regular brushing. There is no issue that these designers indeed put their heads into the crafting of this particular toothbrush design but unfortunately for them, it just doesn’t fit the purpose of the product. It ended up in complete disaster because it made brushing all the more very difficult to perform.
The tooth brush design we are referring to is a specialized toothbrush designed for both right-handed and left-handed versions. The idea to have toothbrushes for right handed and left handed persons is highly appreciated. It is contoured to perfectly fit the hand of a person while giving it a depression for the thumb and its needed grip. Only a few designers would have thought of that and would have taken into consideration the difficulty left handed persons may have experienced whenever they brush their teeth. But the rest of the design is highly questionable.
The Negative Consequences of Ergonomic Design
There are no issues that the use of left hand and right hand may indeed give additional convenience to the user but the designers failed to realize that left handed persons will not use their left hand alone when brushing. They have to shift hands from time to time to better reach the far-end corners of your mouth. Unfortunately, since the design is crafted to gear towards a particular hand then shift of movement becomes quite difficult.
Another feature which gives discomfort to the user is its large tooth brush head in comparison to our manual and conventional toothbrushes. This makes brushing inconvenient especially when you start brushing your molars.
Suggestion and Recommendation
It is far better to have a tooth brush with a symmetrical handle so the person can easily shift use of it and easily rotate it in the hand without feeling inconvenience about it. The designers may have also done variations in the brush sizes so individuals can choose which the best tooth brush size is for the individual.
