[01/07/2010] History of electric toothbrush

History

The first ever electric toothbrush was invented in Switzerland by Dr. Philippe-G. Woog, who founded his company called BROXO and started the manufacturing of an automatic toothbrush called Broxodent. BROXO was launched in 1954 and only five years later the Broxodent was introduced in the United States at the Centennial Congress of the American Dental Association.  Initially, this was a toothbrush that was meant to aid people with disabilities and patients that wore braces, but eventually a number of studies claimed that since the electric toothbrush eliminates the “human factor” it ultimately ensures better oral hygiene, and this caused a surge in the electric toothbrushes’ popularity.

The first all-American electric toothbrush was created and marketed by General Electric and was created in 1960. For quite some time the Broxodent and the General Electric automatic toothbrush were the only two rival products and each one of them had its advantages and disadvantages. The General Electric’s automatic toothbrush was powered by NiCad batteries, which was quite convenient, but these batteries would often run out of power and once completely drained, the toothbrush had to be replaced. The Broxodent was powered by electricity, so it could run for as long as needed, but that provided safety hazards; in the 1990s, with legislation passed in many countries that restricted the use of AC-powered devices in bathrooms, the electric toothbrushes had to either use transformers to lower the voltage or be powered by batteries.

With the great improvement of the quality and the lifetime of the batteries, almost all of the today’s electric toothbrushes are powered with replaceable and rechargeable batteries. And with the ever increasing competition between the oral care companies, today there is a good variety of models on the market and quite a few high-quality brands as well.
